If your student is struggling to graduate from high school and you suspect substance use disorder is contributing, there is hope. When it comes to young people and substance abuse, early intervention is key.
Indiana’s only recovery high school
Hope Academy, Indiana’s only recovery high school, might be the right next step for your high school student. Because Hope Academy is the only school of its kind in the state of Indiana, it can be a bit confusing to know exactly what we do and who we serve. We hope to help you determine if our recovery high school is the right fit for your student.
Hope Academy is a mayor-sponsored, tuition-free, public charter high school. We specialize in working with teens who are struggling with substance use. We are not a treatment facility, and a student does not need to identify with the label of “addict” for admission into our school.
To qualify for admission into Hope Academy, a student must live in Indiana. We accept students who have been suspended or expelled for drug or alcohol-related issues. Hope Academy enrolls students, grades 9-12, year-round, so it’s never too late for a fresh start.
What is substance use disorder?
We recognize substance use disorder as a spectrum from experimentation to substance abuse to physiological dependence. And we successfully serve students throughout the entire continuum. You do not have to wait until a student is out of options to get a student the help they need.
Some sobering statistics about adolescent and teen substance abuse:
- 21% of Indiana’s high school students report taking prescription drugs without a doctor’s prescription one or more times during their life.
- In the United States, an estimated 1,300,000 Americans ages 12-17 are affected with substance use disorder.
Is Hope Academy the right fit for your high school student?
There is evidence that 80% of adolescents will relapse within 90 days if they return to their original high school. Deciding if a recovery high school is the next step is not an easy consideration. We recognize that and are here to help.
Here are several indicators that may help answer if Hope Academy is right for your student:
- Student was caught with drugs or alcohol at school.
- Student has experienced a significant drop in grades.
- Student has changed friends or is isolating themselves.
- Student has become withdrawn, aggressive, anxious or depressed.
- Student has lost interest in activities they once enjoyed.
