Hope Academy Students Travel to Washington D.C. with Simon Youth Foundation

Last week, a group of Hope Academy students packed their bags and headed to the nation’s capital for a trip that blended education, inspiration, and personal growth. The multi-day experience was part of a national initiative through Simon Youth Foundation (SYF)—a long-standing partner of Hope Academy and advocate for educational opportunities that support students in unique learning environments.

As a proud Simon Youth Academy (SYF), Hope Academy joined other SYF-affiliated schools from across the country for this unforgettable opportunity. The trip gave students the chance to deepen their understanding of American government, explore historic landmarks, and connect with peers from different communities—many of whom are also navigating nontraditional educational paths.

Over the course of the week, students toured major monuments and museums, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Holocaust Museum, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. They also visited the U.S. Capitol, attended leadership workshops, participated in a mock Congress, and spent time reflecting on their own power as young people and citizens.

“It was a good experience and opportunity for the students and staff,” Aleesha Bullock, MSW, LSW, Hope Academy Director of Student Recovery Services said. “Some of our students are unaware that there are other pages and chapters because they have always been stuck on the same page. It was awesome to be a part of another page in their book.”

For many of the students, it was their first time visiting Washington, D.C.—and for some, their first time on a plane. Moments of joy and reflection were woven throughout the trip, from late-night group conversations to standing in places they had only seen in photos or learned about in the classroom.

Through Hope Academy’s partnership with Simon Youth Foundation, opportunities like this go beyond the classroom. They

reinforce the values of connection, confidence, and civic engagement—key components in helping students grow not only as learners, but as leaders in recovery.

We are grateful to SYF for making this trip possible and to our students for representing Hope Academy with curiosity, courage, and pride.
